Place Description
The ruins of the castle of Aguilar crown a rocky outcrop in the middle of the famous vineyard of Upper Fitou, and scrubland. The oldest part is the upper chamber, directed towards the attacking side. It dates from the 12th century.
In the 12th century, the castle belongs to the lords of Termes. King Louis IX establishes a garrison in 1246. The Royal Engineers alter the castle, in the late 13th century. This is one of the “five sons of Carcassonne “, who oversaw the border with Aragon. After several spanish attacks in the 14th century, it was finally abandoned in 1659.
